What does it really take to prepare humans for life beyond Earth? In this talk, we are taken inside one of the world’s largest Mars simulation missions, where isolation, limited resources, and extreme conditions reveal not only technical challenges, but deeply human ones.Through personal experience, the talk explores who gets to be part of humanity’s next giant leap, and why diversity, identity, and belonging may be just as critical to space exploration as rockets and technology. Mackenzie Calle is an American artist whose project The Gay Space Agency reimagines the history of space exploration through a queer lens. Combining archival NASA imagery and original photography, she highlights the untold stories of LGBTQ+ pioneers and imagines a more inclusive cosmic future.
