US mail-in voting rules face legal battle ahead of midterm elections

Mail-in voting has become the centre of an intensifying legal and political battle in the United States ahead of the midterm elections.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly opposed mail-in ballots, raising concerns about election security. Democrats and voting rights advocates argue that restrictions could suppress participation and make it harder for eligible voters to cast their ballots.

A series of legal challenges has produced conflicting rulings, with some voting restrictions blocked by courts before being reinstated on appeal.

Meanwhile, states including North Carolina have already begun sending ballots to voters, adding urgency to the legal disputes.

The US Postal Service is also facing questions over whether it is prepared to handle the volume of election mail and meet new technology and processing requirements.

With the midterms approaching, the fight over mail-in voting could have major implications for how millions of Americans cast their ballots.
