South Korea introduces tough AI safety laws amid deepfake and scam concerns
South Korea has introduced some of the world's strictest artificial intelligence safety laws following public outrage over sexually explicit deepfakes and financial scams targeting thousands of people.Basic Act on the Development of Artificial Intelligence and the Establishment of a Foundation for Trustworthiness requires digital watermarking of AI images, risk assessments of all services, and human oversight of high-impact AI systems that could threaten safety or fundamental rights.
However, the legislation has sparked concerns from tech start-ups who warn it will stifle innovation, whilst civil society groups argue it enables government censorship of opinion and does not provide sufficient protections.
Al Jazeera's Jack Barton reports from Seoul, South Korea.
Robert Sparrow is a professor of Philosophy at Monash University where he researches the ethics of AI and robots. He says regulation is necessary if people are to have trust in AI.
