Another Conservative MP defects as Liberals near majority
Another Conservative MP has crossed the floor to join the Liberals — putting Mark Carney’s government within one seat of a parliamentary majority.Michael Ma, the rookie Conservative MP for Markham–Unionville, defected just eight months after being elected. Prime Minister Carney formally introduced Ma as a new Liberal at a party event last night.
Ma’s defection is raising eyebrows, given his recent and sharply worded criticism of Liberal immigration policy. While in Conservative caucus, Ma accused Liberals of undermining borders, supporting a two-tier citizenship system, and handing out Canadian citizenship “to people who want to wear the Team Canada jersey without putting time on the ice.”
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre issued a blistering statement, saying Ma was elected “to fight against Liberal inflationary spending driving up the cost of living,” but has now chosen to “endorse the very policies he was elected to oppose.”
The floor-crossing comes as Carney prepares another major move in Ottawa: appointing close ally Mark Wiseman as Canada’s next ambassador to the United States. According to The Globe and Mail, Wiseman’s appointment has already been approved by cabinet.
