Astronomy | Amy Glazier | TEDxMeredith College
"I believe astronomy can save the world because astronomy saved me." Homeschooled in rural Texas with no clear path to college, Amy Glazier found purpose in the stars when Carl Sagan's words revealed a profound truth: we are all made of stardust. From remedial algebra to summa cum laude in physics, she shares how the universe's story of connection gave her the courage to overcome impossible odds. Amy Glazier is an award-winning scientist, educator, and advocate for accessible science. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Physics at Meredith College. A first-generation college graduate from Texas, Dr. Glazier’s academic journey began with an associate’s degree from Collin County Community College, followed by a bachelor’s degree with honors in physics from Austin College. She went on to earn both her master’s and doctorate in astrophysics at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her research explores planetary habitability and astrobiology—asking profound questions about life beyond Earth. Alongside her scholarship, Dr. Glazier is deeply committed to public outreach and to making science both humane and inspiring, especially for first-generation students and those from historically marginalized communities. Her teaching and mentorship reflect a passion not only for discovery, but also for building pathways that welcome more voices into science.
