The Pakistan-Saudi Arabia-Turkey Defence Pact, signed in Mecca on August 7, 2026, has triggered fresh debate over the emergence of a new regional security architecture in West Asia. The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement includes a NATO Article 5-style principle under which an armed attack against one member is treated as an attack against all three. Turkey has also indicated that the framework could evolve through political and military coordination, joint exercises and defence-industrial cooperation.
But is this really a “New NATO” or “Islamic NATO”?
In this Current Affairs video, we analyse the Pakistan-Saudi-Turkey Defence Pact, its strategic significance, the military and economic capabilities of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and the limitations of their emerging alignment.
The video also examines a possible India-Israel-UAE-Japan strategic grouping as a counter-balancing mechanism. India brings military scale, industrial capacity and a central position in the Indian Ocean; Israel contributes advanced defence technology, intelligence and missile-defence capabilities; the UAE brings capital, logistics and Gulf access; while Japan adds advanced industrial technology, maritime capabilities and Indo-Pacific strategic depth.
A key focus is maritime security — connecting the Eastern Mediterranean, Red Sea, Arabian Sea and wider Indo-Pacific — along with defence technology, counter-drone systems, cyber security, AI, space cooperation, intelligence sharing, critical infrastructure protection and defence manufacturing.
The discussion also explores whether this proposed India-Israel-UAE-Japan “New Quad” can become a flexible strategic network rather than a formal military alliance.
