Locating Culture Through Listening to Derian Bukit | Sheila Julis | TEDxUoNMalaysia

When one begins to recognize the Orang Asli as equals, this shift often brings an unexpected reversal. Assumptions carried as neutral or universal start to feel partial. In that moment, the Orang Asli worldview quietly reveals the limits of the observer’s own ways of knowing.

What if we approach Orang Asli culture with humility through understanding their work of care? Sheila Julis reflects on and deconstruct Orang Asli philosophy to challenge long-held misconceptions: where forests are home, durians tell stories, and human life is inseparable from nature. It is a powerful reminder that respect, care, Indigenous knowledge, and Orang Asli land rights are not obstacles to progress, but essential foundations for sustainable protection. Sheila has journeyed from music into humanitarian work and academia, focusing on community-centered initiatives. Through her engagement with the Orang Asli, she makes academic knowledge accessible and inspires action. To highlight their challenges accessing land rights, she uses durian as material culture, showing how it embodies care, heritage, and intergenerational connection. Sheila’s work builds bridges between societies, emphasizing the deep relationships between people, culture, and the environment.
