Iran’s confrontation with the United States has entered a new economic and maritime phase. Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has advanced a plan allowing fees to be charged on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, although the measure still needs to clear further legislative and constitutional stages before becoming law. Reports say the proposed framework covers services such as navigation, safety and other maritime assistance.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump’s administration has intensified economic pressure on Tehran through what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described as an “economic D-Day.” Washington’s latest campaign targets Iran-linked financial, shipping, technology, aviation and other networks while warning countries and businesses continuing to support Iranian trade that they could face further consequences.

The Strait of Hormuz is at the centre of this confrontation because of its importance to global energy flows. Iran has repeatedly threatened to use the waterway and Gulf oil exports as leverage if US economic pressure continues. China is also crucial because it remains Iran’s dominant buyer of shipped crude, making Beijing’s response to Washington’s pressure a major factor in determining whether Tehran can withstand the sanctions campaign.

In this video, we explain Iran’s Strait of Hormuz fee plan, Trump’s Economic D-Day, US sanctions on Iran, Iran’s oil-export leverage, China’s role, the importance of Hormuz to global energy markets, and what this escalating US-Iran standoff could mean for oil prices and international trade.
