En 2014, los habitantes de una aldea de Java sufrieron la primera inundación grave. Desde entonces, el mar los inunda al ritmo de las mareas. Y el nivel del océano sigue subiendo, hasta 15 cm al año.Hasta ahora, los habitantes de Timbulsloko, en el norte de Java, han hecho frente al aumento del nivel del mar construyendo sus casas a mayor altura. ¿Cuánto tiempo más podrán seguir así? Donde antes se extendían carreteras y extensos arrozales, hoy no hay más que agua. El océano se ha adentrado profundamente en tierra y ha devorado todo lo que se interponía en su camino: casas, jardines, manglares.
Durante generaciones, la gente de aquí vivió principalmente del cultivo del arroz; ahora pescan y se dedican a la acuicultura. El agua llega hasta las rodillas en sus casas cuando sube la marea; han subido las camas y los pasillos para no tener que huir. El océano también se está apoderando del cementerio; cada vez se adentra más en este lugar apartado, llevándoselo poco a poco. Los habitantes luchan contra ello.
Pero, ¿hasta cuándo se podrá mantener el agua fuera de la vida cotidiana? ¿Y cuánto tiempo aguantarán las personas?
