Wladimir Putin sieht sie als Vorbild und sie trägt als einzige Herrscherin den Beinamen die Große: Zarin Katharina II. herrscht im 18. Jahrhundert 34 Jahre lang über Russland. Bekannt ist Katharina für ihre expansive Außenpolitik: Sie dehnt das russische Imperium auf Gebiete des heutigen Polens, der Ukraine sowie auf das Baltikum aus. Mit politischem Geschick gelingt es ihr, Russland als Großmacht in Europa zu verankern. Als Vertreterin des aufklärten Absolutismus reformiert sie aber auch das russische Reich.Wie wurde aus der Prinzessin von Anhalt-Zerbst eine der mächtigsten Personen ihrer Zeit?
