William the Conqueror left England to one son, Normandy to another, and money to the youngest. What followed was a bitter struggle over his legacy, fought through rebellions, shifting alliances, and open war. This Kings and Generals documentary follows the Norman kings from William’s death in 1087 to the Battle of Tinchebray in 1106. William II, known as William Rufus, faces a rebellion backed by his elder brother Robert Curthose. Then a fatal arrow in the New Forest leaves the English throne vacant, and Henry moves fast to claim it. But claiming the crown is only the beginning. Robert returns from the First Crusade determined to take England, while ambitious barons choose sides across the Channel. Treaties buy time, royal marriages strengthen Henry’s position, and rival claims draw the brothers into another confrontation in Normandy. At Tinchebray, Henry and Robert finally meet in a battle that decides the future of their father’s lands. Follow the cavalry charges, hidden reserves, and sudden retreat that turn a family feud into a decisive victory. The opening episode of our Anarchy series explores the struggle before England’s later succession crisis. Henry has won his brother’s duchy, but a devastating succession crisis still lies ahead.
