Why Your AI Images Look Generic (And How Pros Fix It)

Your AI images look generic because the model makes every creative decision for you, and this Firefly prompt formula takes that control back.

This series is created in partnership with Adobe. #AdobePartner

Type one word into Adobe Firefly and the AI model picks the pose, lighting, color grade, and location for you. The fix is language you already use as a creative professional: write your prompt like the creative brief you would hand a photographer.

You'll see how to generate images with Google's Gemini model in Firefly, add a reference image so you get your talent instead of a stranger, and build a structured prompt where each section works as its own control. Then we push it further with exact Pantone colors, film stocks, and real locations by name. The full prompt formula and the exact prompt from the video are below.

This tutorial is part of Generative AI Essentials for Designers, a five-part series for designers, art directors, and photographers who want AI images that match the brief.

✍️ THE STRUCTURED PROMPT FORMULA
Copy the template, fill in each line, then change one section at a time.

Subject: [who or what, plus outfit, hair, and details. Call your reference by its number, for example, "the woman in Image 1"]

Action: [pose and expression]

Location: [where the shot takes place]

Composition: [camera angle, framing, where the subject sits in the frame, leading lines]

Lighting: [light source, time of day, direction]

Color Grade: [the overall color treatment]

Camera: [lens and depth of field]

The exact prompt from the video:

Subject: the woman in Image 1, wearing a distressed blue denim jacket over a tucked-in white button-up shirt, fitted black jeans, a brown belt with a silver buckle, and brown high boots. Her hair is tied in a ponytail.

Action: standing confidently, looking forward at the camera, with a confident smirk.

Location: an empty street in New York City.

Composition: shot from below eye level, full-body, with space above her head; she is in the center of the image. She stands in the middle of the street with white traffic lines and buildings creating leading lines pointing to her body.

Lighting: a warm golden hour with a sun flare coming behind her.
Color Grade: a warm, gentle amber.

Camera: an 85mm lens with a shallow depth of field, so the background falls softly out of focus.
