In Skelkelosen, Roxanne Charles shares a story deeply rooted in the Semiahmoo First Nations history and traditional knowledge.Roxanne Charles is a mixed media artist and member of Semiahmoo First Nation. An active member of her community, she promotes arts, language, and culture through a wide range of mediums, including digital art, jewelry, engraving, painting, weaving, sculpture, ceramics, and installation-based work.
Roxanne holds a BFA and a BA in General Studies with minors in Art History and Cultural Anthropology from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and is currently completing her Master of Fine Arts at Simon Fraser University. Her work reflects her lived experience as an Indigenous woman on Turtle Island, exploring themes of culture, nature, spirituality, identity, environment, urbanization, intergenerational trauma, and resilience.
As a contemporary storyteller and historian, Roxanne activates visual representation, oral history, and ceremony — methods that have been carried by the Semiahmoo People for thousands of years. Some of the themes commonly explored in her work are culture, nature, spirituality, environment, identity, hybridity, urbanization, exploitation, intergenerational trauma, and various forms of violence (such as lateral, systemic, and domestic).
Roxanne is a contemporary storyteller and historian. Her work activates visual representation, oral history, and ceremony (methods which have been utilized by the Semiahmoo People for thousands of years).
