Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon as a violation of its fragile understanding with the United States. In response, US President Donald Trump warned that Washington could impose tolls on vessels using the strategic waterway if talks with Iran fail. Trump said such charges would be compensation for the security services provided by the United States in the region.Despite Iran's announcement, US Central Command (CENTCOM) says commercial shipping continues to move safely through the strait. According to CENTCOM, 55 commercial vessels transited the waterway on June 20, with safe passage remaining intact. The latest escalation comes as diplomatic efforts continue in Switzerland. US Vice President JD Vance is expected to meet the Iranian delegation as part of talks aimed at implementing a peace agreement and launching a two-month negotiation process on unresolved issues, including Iran's nuclear programme.
