The 2008 financial crisis wasn’t caused by one bad bank or one reckless borrower. It was the result of an entire financial system built on cheap money, risky mortgages, complex securities, and the assumption that housing prices would keep rising forever.

This video explains how subprime mortgages were handed to borrowers who often couldn’t afford them, packaged into mortgage-backed securities and CDOs, stamped with AAA ratings, and sold around the world as supposedly safe investments. When homeowners began defaulting, the entire structure started collapsing. Lehman Brothers failed, credit markets froze, millions lost their jobs, millions more faced foreclosure, and the U.S. government stepped in with massive emergency bailouts. Meanwhile, firms that survived quickly returned to paying billions in bonuses, while very few senior executives faced criminal consequences.

The crisis officially ended, but the incentives, debt, and financial structures that helped create it never fully disappeared.
