What Is Indian Cinema, Really?
Bollywood isn't Indian cinema — it's one branch of it. Hindi-language filmmaking out of Mumbai gets all the international attention, but the history of Indian cinema stretches from the first Indian film in 1913 across at least seven major regional industries, each with its own stars, genres, and century-old traditions.
This episode traces it back to the beginning: Dadasaheb Phalke, widely credited as the father of Indian cinema, who wrote, directed, edited, and processed 1913's Raja Harishchandra almost entirely by himself. From there, we cover Tamil cinema history, Telugu cinema history, and the rise of Malayalam and Bengali filmmaking, plus the Parsi theatre tradition — Urdu dialogue, Persian romance epics, ghazal and qawwali — that shaped Indian cinema's love of music and melodrama before a single frame was ever recorded.
Even silent Indian films were never really silent — live narrators, tablas, and small orchestras turned every screening into a performance, laying the groundwork for the moment sound arrived with 1931's Alam Ara. Understanding regional cinema in India means understanding that music and oral storytelling came first; the camera came second.
