Qatar says ‘still waiting’ for Israeli response to Gaza truce proposal
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari says Doha is “still waiting” for Israel’s response to a proposal for a truce and captive release deal, after Hamas agreed to the framework more than a week ago.The latest proposal put forward by mediators involves an initial 60-day truce and staggered exchanges of Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners, but Israel has appeared reluctant to budge from its latest demand that all the captives be freed at once.
“The statements [from Israel] that we are hearing right now do not fill us with confidence,” said al-Ansari, who previously described the latest deal as “almost identical” to an earlier US-backed plan.
While not directly responding to the latest proposal, Israeli PM Netanyahu announced he had instructed new negotiations seeking “the release of all our hostages and the end of the war under conditions acceptable to Israel”. He also doubled down on plans for the Israeli army to seize Gaza City.
Al-Ansari said mediators did not “take seriously” any announcements outside the negotiation process itself and that Israel is now responsible for responding to the current offer. “Anything else is political posturing by the Israeli side,” he said.
