“You cannot have Public Safety Without the Public.” When we speak about public safety efforts and its contributors, Returning Citizens and Prior Incarcerated Men and Women are often excluded from the conceptualization. In underserved communities devastated by internal conflict, returning citizens and their families are commonplace and are statistically most likely to re-offend and or become a victim or perpetrator of violence. There are community-based strategies out there that utilize the natural resources in underserved communities stricken with violence by way of prior incarcerated individuals to serve as change agents and conduits for positive engagement. When properly trained and utilized their efforts are statistically proven to transform a culture of violence into a culture of peace. In my speech, I will tell a story of tragedy, and how the most unlikely individuals came together to have the “audacity of hope.” I will lift ingenuity, and how community-based solutions are complimentary to public safety when provided sustainable resources. I will close with a call to arms for all of us to be the change that we want to see. Redemption has the potential to be the most powerful anecdote, and even the fruit that falls to the ground bear can bear fruit. Terrance Staley is the Executive Director of the Alliance of Concerned Men, Community, and National Engagement Leader, and TA (Technical Assistant) to IIR, LISC, the White House Intervention Collaborative Task Force, and CBPS Collective.
