تینا قاضی‌مراد، سردبیر خبر منوتو، می‌گوید سفر احمد الشرع به واشنگتن یک دیدار معمولی نیست؛ لحظه‌ای تعیین‌کننده در بازتعریف جایگاه سوریه در نظم تازه خاورمیانه است. برای نخستین‌بار یک رئیس‌جمهور سوری رسماً وارد کاخ سفید شده؛ کشوری که سال‌ها زیر سایه جنگ، تحریم و نفوذ جمهوری اسلامی بود. به این ترتیب، روایت تکراری جمهوری اسلامی برای ترساندن افکار عمومی «اگر ما نباشیم، ایران سوریه می‌شود» ـ فرو ریخته است.به‌گفته او، عامل ویرانی سوریه دخالت جمهوری اسلامی بود. الشرع و بسیاری در دمشق دریافته‌اند که اسلام‌گرایی، فلسطین‌محوری و ناسیونالیسم عربی جز ویرانی نتیجه‌ای نداشته؛ بنابراین راهِ همکاری با آمریکا، عادی‌سازی منطقه‌ای و گذار تدریجی به ساختار باثبات را برگزیده‌اند؛ همان الگویی که پیش‌تر محمدرضا شاه پهلوی تعریف کرده بود: میهن‌دوستی، توسعه و ارتباط با جهان بر پایه منافع ملی. در برابر این تغییر، جمهوری اسلامی می‌کوشد روایت قدیمی را حفظ کند، اما واقعیت روشن است: مسئله سوریه، جمهوری اسلامی بود؛ و همان‌گونه که سوریه با کنار زدن این عامل در مسیر بازسازی قرار گرفته، ایران نیز با حذف این غده، فرصت بازیابی خواهد یافت.
