Durante el conflicto armado interno de Guatemala, la tierra se convirtió en el centro de la disputa. Alrededor del año 1978, campesinos de varias regiones se movilizaron para tomar posesión de sus distintos terrenos con el fin de legalizarlos. Entendiendo esto como una amenaza, el Ejército crea un destacamento militar que asesina a miles de guatemaltecos y agrede a muchas mujeres, sembrando el horror en estas comunidades.
