[ PROGRESS ] Blender For Android - Mantaflow + Geometry Nodes + Cloth + And More
Hey everyone.First things first: Blender Foundation and its community. None of this exists without them. And the Android port did not start with me either. It started with Simfeo, who did the hard bring up work and got Blender running on arm64 with Vulkan, tested on a Tab S7 FE and an S22 Ultra. His work is here: https://github.com/simfeo/blender
I picked that up and kept going on a Galaxy S24 Ultra. I want to be honest about what this is: an experimental build. I do not know yet if I will be able to release it for download, and the reason is not that I want to keep it to myself.
Blender is GPL. That is the whole point of it, and it means that the moment I hand anyone an APK, I have to hand over the matching source as well. I have no problem with that, it is how this project reached me in the first place. What I do not want to do is dump a pile of half broken scripts and hacks on the internet and call it a release. If my code goes public, and it should, I want it to be something a person can actually read, build and trust, not a mess someone else has to clean up.
I am also very new to C++, even though I started programming 19 years ago, I have worked with Rust, Kotlin, PHP, Python, C#, and a few other languages. What has been carrying this is stubbornness plus GPT Sol and Opus 5 helping me cross compile library after library to ARM and work out why things break on a phone.
Where it stands now: pretty much everything works, in a single APK of about 240 MB.
And honestly, my real wish is not to be the person who ships this. It is for the Android port to become something official, with companies and people backing it so the Blender developers can do it themselves, with all the experience they have. Everything here is one guy learning C++ against a codebase far bigger than him. It works, and it proves the phone can do it, but Blender deserves a port built by the people who know it best.
Huge thanks to the Blender Foundation and to Simfeo. I am just standing on their work ❤️ Receive SMS online on sms24.me
