Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Robbery Suspect After Hostage Situation in San Diego
* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) *San Diego, California — On May 20, 2024, at 10:28 a.m., San Diego Police Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from a market in the 1000 block of Morena Boulevard regarding a robbery and an assault with a deadly weapon. The caller said a man pulled out a knife and threatened her when she confronted him for stealing merchandise. The caller provided a description of a 33-year-old man who has been identified but whose name is being withheld pending family notification. San Diego Police officers arrived and located the suspect in the 5100 block of Napa Street. San Diego Police Helicopter (ABLE) was overhead as officers located and approached the suspect. The ABLE air crew noted that he was armed with a knife. Officers gave the suspect commands to drop the knife. He did not comply and walked away from officers through a parking lot.
Officer Tellam was one of two officers who deployed a taser. The tasers proved ineffective, and the suspect ran towards Friars Road. The suspect ran onto Friars Road and took a man hostage by putting a knife to his throat. The victim's dogs approached officers who were in close pursuit and then turned to engage the suspect as he assaulted their owner. The suspect made several stabbing motions toward the victim. Three San Diego Police officers discharged their service weapons, striking him. As the suspect made stabbing motions toward the victim, officer Steinbach fired followed by officer Tellam and officer Howells. He maintained possession of the knife in his right hand. Officers began life-saving measures until the arrival of paramedics. The suspect died at the scene. The victim was treated by paramedics and released at the scene. No officers were injured.
