United States Marines Learning to be a Recon Marines

The Reconnaissance Training Company (RTC) is a specialized subordinate element of the **Advanced Infantry Training Battalion (AITB)**, located within the **School of Infantry-West (SOI-W)** at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.

Essentially, this is the "schoolhouse" where the Marine Corps builds its Reconnaissance Marines. It is the gatekeeper for the 0321 (Reconnaissance Marine)** Military Occupational Specialty (MOS).

Core Mission
The primary mission of RTC is to train, develop, and qualify Marines in the advanced skills required for ground and amphibious reconnaissance operations. They take infantry Marines (and some "pipes" or new recruits) and transform them into specialized operators capable of deep insertion, surveillance, and tactical intelligence gathering.

Key Courses Conducted
RTC is most famous for hosting the "Pipeline," which includes:

Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC): The foundational course for all Recon Marines. It is notoriously difficult, focusing on patrolling, land navigation, ocean swimming, scout swimming, and amphibious insert/extract techniques.
Reconnaissance Surveillance and Acquisition Course (RSAC): Advanced training in specialized equipment and observation techniques.
Reconnaissance Team Leader Course (RTLC): Leadership training specifically for the NCOs who will lead four-to-six-man teams in the field.

The Hierarchy
To understand where RTC fits, it helps to look at the organizational "ladder":

1. Training and Education Command (TECOM): The top-level command for all Marine training.
2. School of Infantry-West (SOI-W): One of two major infantry schools (the other being SOI-East at Camp Lejeune).
3. Advanced Infantry Training Battalion (AITB): The branch of SOI that handles "post-entry-level" training (advanced mortars, machine guns, snipers, and recon).
4. Reconnaissance Training Company (RTC): The specific unit dedicated solely to the 0321 community.

What Makes it Unique?
Unlike standard infantry training, RTC focuses heavily on Amphibious Competency. Because Recon Marines are often the eyes and ears of a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a massive portion of the training at SOI-West involves the Pacific Ocean.

Marines at RTC are expected to master:
Helocasting: Jumping from a moving helicopter into the water.
* **Small Boat Operations:** Specifically utilizing the CRRC (Combat Rubber Raiding Craft).
Hydrographic Surveys: Mapping beach gradients and obstacles for larger landing forces.

Note: While RTC produces the Marines, they are later assigned to either Reconnaissance Battalions (supporting the Division) or Force Reconnaissance Companies** (supporting the wider Marine Expeditionary Force). Receive SMS online on sms24.me
