"Il riferimento è all’Eneide. Ma in realtà, il primo a nominare l’Italia in un documento storico importante è Giulio Cesare. Quando conquista le Gallie, Cesare scrive un messaggio al Senato: «Prima nelle Gallie avevamo un sentiero (e cioè la fascia costiera che serviva per andare in Spagna, quella che oggi si chiama Provenza, dal latino Provincia). Oggi - dice Cesare - in Gallia, dalle Alpi all’Oceano, non c’è nulla che l’Italia debba temere.» Era la prima volta che qualcuno scriveva Italia in un documento solenne e ufficiale, ma il Senato lo accolse con stizza perché era nemico di Cesare".
