Die Gebirgs- und Winterkampfschule im oberbayerischen Mittenwald bildet Spezialisten für Einsätze in extremem Gelände aus. Auch Sophie muss beweisen, was sie im Bergrettungslehrgang gelernt hat. Als Sanitätssoldatin und Notfallsanitäterin muss sie Verwundete so schnell wie möglich erreichen können - egal, ob auf einem Gipfel oder in einer Schlucht.
Als die Bundeswehr vor 70 Jahren, rund 10 Jahre nach Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs gegründet wurde, war es ein Neuanfang auf allen Ebenen. Ausbildungszentren wie das in Mittenwald mussten erst aufgebaut werden. Aber auch in den Köpfen sollte sich ein Schalter umlegen: Die Bundeswehr sollte ein Gegenentwurf zu Hitlers Wehrmacht sein. Ihre Soldaten: Mündige Staatsbürger in Uniform anstelle blinder Befehlsempfänger. Dennoch ist die Geschichte der Bundeswehr voller Widersprüche.
