Awal mula konflik antara Gus Dur dengan Bimantoro terjadi akibat persoalan bendera Bintang Kejora.
Gus Dur memperbolehkan bendera Bintang Kejora berkibar pada 1 Desember di bawah Bendera Merah Putih.
Namun, aturan Gus Dur berbeda dengan aturan dari Bimantoro yang saat itu Kapolri.
Konflik Gus Dur dengan Bimantoro semakin meruncing saat suhu politik nasional semakin memanas.
Gus Dur kemudian mengumumkan pemberhentian Bimantoro dari jabatan Kapolri tepat pada Hari Bhayangkara, 1 Juli 2001.
Dia menyatakan akan menugaskan Bimantoro sebagai Duta Besar di Malaysia.
Bimantoro kembali menolak keputusan Gus Dur.
Alhasil MPR memutuskan mencopot Gus Dur dari jabatannya sebagai presiden, tanpa melalui mekanisme hukum atau proses pengadilan, pada 23 Juli 2001. (Tribun-Video.com)
