Bangladesh witnessed an extraordinary display of public mourning as tens of thousands gathered in Dhaka to bid farewell to BNP leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, bringing parts of the capital to a standstill. With heavy security in place, crowds assembled from early morning for the funeral prayers, which were attended by interim ruler Muhammad Yunus, senior military and judicial officials, and several foreign dignitaries. Khaleda Zia was accorded full state honours and laid to rest beside her husband, former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, near the Parliament complex. The turnout underscored her enduring political legacy and the BNP’s current public support. At the same time, high-level foreign attendance—particularly from India—highlighted the broader regional and political significance of the moment ahead of Bangladesh’s upcoming elections. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also travelled to Dhaka, where he met Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP’s heir apparent, Tarique Rahman, and handed over a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
