Best, Most Famous, Most Complex, Won't Happen Again ! [Choi Cheolhan VS Luo Xihe] Legendary Game
There are great games. There are legendary games.
And then there is this game.
On December 16, 2005, Choi Cheolhan and Luo Xihe sat down for the deciding game of the Samsung Cup semifinal. The score was tied 1–1. One victory separated them from the world championship final.
Across the board sat two of the most fearless fighters of their generation. Choi Cheolhan—the Viper, a merciless hunter who lived to kill dragons. Luo Xihe—the unpredictable Chinese genius whose extraordinary imagination could discover possibilities invisible to everyone else.
What followed transcended ordinary Go.
The board erupted into a colossal life-and-death struggle. Giant groups became locked together. Liberties vanished. Every move dragged both players deeper into a labyrinth from which there seemed to be no escape.
Then the impossible appeared:
Triple ko.
Three ko fights, chained together in an eternal cycle. Stones could be captured and recaptured forever, with neither player able to bring the game to an end. Officials began preparing for a replay. Commentators believed the result was inevitable. History itself seemed ready to freeze inside an endless loop.
But at the edge of eternity, the board still concealed one final path.
This is the divine game of Choi Cheolhan and Luo Xihe—one of the strangest, deepest, and most miraculous battles ever played on a Go board.
A game that could happen only once in a thousand years.
