Ma questa è una semplificazione che spesso ci impedisce di comprendere la complessità della realtà internazionale. Il mondo non è uniforme e non tutti aspirano necessariamente allo stesso sistema politico o allo stesso stile di vita occidentale.
Esiste una dinamica geopolitica che attraversa tutta la storia: ci sono dittatori che fanno comodo e dittatori che non fanno comodo. Spesso coloro che per un certo periodo risultano utili agli equilibri internazionali diventano improvvisamente scomodi, e viceversa. Non è un fenomeno recente. È accaduto nei secoli e continua ad accadere ancora oggi. Questo porta però a un'altra semplificazione diffusa: l'idea che un sistema autoritario coincida automaticamente con un popolo totalmente oppresso e privo di consenso.
