It’s been nearly a year since the tragedy in Novi Sad, when a concrete canopy at the city’s train station collapsed, killing sixteen people and seriously injuring one. The past year in Serbia has been marked by widespread protests and public unrest. As the anniversary approaches, many are drawing parallels between today’s student movement and the one that, twenty-five years ago, helped bring down Slobodan Milošević. Now, the children of those former student leaders are back on the streets — this time marching alongside their parents, united in the call for justice.Plus, we speak to Božo Kovačević, former Croatian ambassador to Russia, about the far-reaching consequences of Slobodan Milošević’s policies — how his rule reshaped the political and ethnic landscape of the Balkans, and whether the echoes of his nationalism and authoritarianism still influence Serbia’s politics today.
