💈 Vanguard Haircut & Hair Styling at Classic Barbershop AntiguaHad a wonderful time meeting Romeo Batrez and visiting Classic Barbershop Antigua in Guatemala 🇬🇹
Romeo is 50 years old and grew up in San Mateo, California. His parents are Guatemalan and immigrated to the US.
Inspired by his childhood friend Shane Nesbitt, Romeo made a career change and left the office life behind. He says he was, "drawn to the fact that barbers can let their personalities shine through and don’t need to pretend to be anyone they’re not." Romeo also wanted something more active that involved working with his hands after having office jobs for so long.
He trained as a barber in Houston, Texas where he learned that barbering takes patience, time, and attention to detail. Romeo has now been a barber for over 10 years. Around 7 years ago, he decided to make the move to Antigua, Guatemala to be closer to his family. He has always loved this city and thought it would be the perfect place to open a barbershop 🙌🏼
Classic Barbershop Antigua began as a one chair shop out of his apartment and has grown into multiple chairs in the beautiful historic downtown Antigua. Romeo feels proud of his story and you can see the shop is a reflection of him and his journey. He says, "My life has bridged multiple countries, many sports and hobbies, and you can definitely tell it’s owned by a skater, boxer, and Gen Xer." When people are in his chair, he wants them to feel at home and relaxed 💈
During the pandemic Romeo adopted his cat Oki, short for Okami, who quickly became his best friend 🐈 Back when the barbershop was in its old location, Oki was more than just a shop cat - she was "head of customer relations," always around to bring joy❣️ She sadly passed away in June 2024 🤍 Oki is honored and her memory is kept alive through the designs Romeo uses for his shop ✨
✨ Llife advice: "I do not subscribe to the idea of aging." He explains, "We all physically get older, but it doesn’t mean that we should stop doing the things we love." Romeo says as long as he can, he will skateboard, rock climb, box, and dance salsa which has kept him healthy and happy!
In his free time, he also enjoys playing the guitar and spending time with family.
