In this video Firspost explains how Costa Rica has inaugurated a maximum-security prison modelled on El Salvador’s controversial mega-prison, as it steps up efforts to combat organised crime and drug trafficking. The facility, known as CACCO, will eventually house 5,100 inmates, around 20 per cent of the country’s prison population. President Laura Fernández says the prison will strengthen security while respecting human rights. Costa Rica recorded 905 homicides in 2023, followed by 876 in 2024 and 873 in 2025.
