El avión espía de EEUU que acabó muy mal
Estados Unidos tenía un avión espía que supuestamente podía volar tan alto que ningún soviético sería capaz de tocarlo. El problema llegó cuando la URSS consiguió derribarlo… y Washington cometió un error todavía más gordo: pensó que el piloto había muerto.En plena Guerra Fría, la CIA utilizaba los U-2 para atravesar territorio soviético a más de 20 kilómetros de altura y fotografiar bases militares, instalaciones nucleares y zonas relacionadas con misiles. Durante años parecía que los soviéticos no podían hacer absolutamente nada para detenerlos. Hasta que apareció el S-75 Dvina.
El 1 de mayo de 1960, Francis Gary Powers despegó desde Pakistán en una misión secreta que debía cruzar buena parte de la Unión Soviética. Pero cerca de Ekaterimburgo todo se fue al garete: misiles soviéticos alcanzaron su U-2 y Powers terminó cayendo en paracaídas dentro de territorio enemigo.
Lo mejor vino después. Estados Unidos lanzó una historia sobre un avión meteorológico de la NASA creyendo que no quedaban pruebas. Los soviéticos dejaron que siguieran hablando… hasta enseñar al mundo que tenían al piloto vivo, las cámaras y el material de espionaje.
Y aquello acabaría cargándose una cumbre entre las dos superpotencias.
