What Gave Azerbaijan the Nerve to Defy Turkey? | The Link

For thirty years, Turkey and Azerbaijan have called themselves “one nation, two states.” Turkey helped Azerbaijan win the 2020 Karabakh war. Azerbaijan supplies about a fifth of Turkey’s gas. Their pipelines, armies and economies are tied together.

So why has Azerbaijan’s ruling party now accused Turkey of “hegemonic tendencies” and told Ankara to respect its sovereignty?

The trigger was a hijab ban in Azerbaijan’s schools, introduced in September, which drew sharp criticism from officials close to President Erdoğan. Before that came another flashpoint: Azerbaijan’s delegate stayed seated during Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s UN speech while dozens walked out.

But the real story runs underground, through a pipeline that carries gas from the Caspian Sea across Turkey into Europe. With the Iran war choking Hormuz and crippling Qatar’s gas exports, Europe needs every pipeline that avoids the Gulf. Azerbaijan now sells gas to 16 countries, including Germany and Austria. And when Europe needs your gas, you can afford to talk back, even to your big brother.

In this episode of The Link, Shubhangi Sharma explains why Azerbaijan is drawing a red line against Turkey, what Israel has to do with it, and who really holds the power in this alliance now.
