Most Terrifying Financial Shift in the World Right Now
One of the most dangerous financial trades in the world is starting to unwind, and most investors have no idea how exposed they are.For years, Wall Street borrowed ultra-cheap Japanese yen and poured that money into higher-yielding U.S. assets. This became known as the yen carry trade.
As long as Japanese interest rates stayed near zero and the yen remained weak, the strategy worked. But that relationship is changing.
Japan is raising rates, domestic bond yields are climbing, and the yen has become increasingly unstable. That makes borrowing in Japan less attractive and forces leveraged investors to unwind positions, selling U.S. stocks, Treasuries, crypto, and other assets to repay yen-denominated loans. We already saw what that can look like during the violent market selloff of August 2024. Now the trade may be even more dangerous.
Japan remains one of the largest foreign holders of U.S. government debt, while America is increasingly dependent on investors buying enormous amounts of new Treasury bonds. If Japanese capital flows back home, Treasury yields could rise further, pushing up mortgage rates, corporate borrowing costs, and government interest expenses. At the same time, central banks around the world are diversifying away from dollar assets and increasing their gold reserves.
The biggest financial shift happening right now may not be in stocks, crypto, or AI. It may be the slow reversal of the cheap-money system that helped inflate them all.
