Langkah ini diambil sebagai balasan atas kebijakan Beijing yang memperluas kontrol ekspor logam tanah jarang — bahan vital untuk industri semikonduktor, kendaraan listrik, hingga senjata pertahanan AS.
Trump menyebut kebijakan China itu sebagai “tindakan agresif dan berbahaya” yang mengancam rantai pasok global.
“China tidak seharusnya diizinkan menahan dunia sebagai sandera,” ujarnya di Truth Social.
Keputusan Trump memicu kepanikan pasar. Indeks S&P 500 anjlok 2,7 persen, Dow Jones turun 1,9 persen, dan Nasdaq merosot 3,6 persen — hari terburuk bagi bursa AS sejak April.
China saat ini menguasai lebih dari 90 persen produksi global logam tanah jarang dan baru saja menambah lima unsur baru ke daftar kendali ekspornya.
Langkah Trump ini dikhawatirkan menyalakan kembali perang dagang antara dua ekonomi terbesar dunia.
Ia bahkan mengisyaratkan pertemuannya dengan Presiden Xi Jinping akhir bulan ini bisa dibatalkan.
Meski banyak ekonom memperingatkan dampaknya terhadap inflasi, Trump tetap yakin tarif besar-besaran ini akan memperkuat ekonomi Amerika.
“Mungkin terasa menyakitkan sekarang, tapi ini baik untuk Amerika dalam jangka panjang,” tegasnya.
