Tausend Menschen nahmen sich im Frühjahr 1945 bei Ende des 2. Weltkriegs in Demmin im heutigen Mecklenburg- Vorpommern das Leben. Sie gingen ins Wasser, erhängten sich, vergifteten sich und ihre Kinder. Und zwar aus Angst vor der anrückenden Roten Armee. Die sowjetischen Soldaten brannten große Teile der Stadt nieder, viele Frauen wurden vergewaltigt.In der DDR herrschte offiziell Stilschweigen über dieses traumatische Ereignis. Erst Mitte der 1990-er Jahre wurde es in seinem ganzen Ausmaß publik. Frank Wolfgang Sonntag brachte damals die Geschichte ins Fernsehen und sprach mit Zeitzeugen. 30 Jahre später war er noch einmal in Demmin.
