Nowruz, also spelled Norooz, is the Persian New Year celebration and one of the oldest cultural festivals in the world. Rooted in ancient Persian civilization, Nowruz marks the first day of spring and symbolizes renewal, hope, rebirth, peace, and the connection between humans and nature. Celebrated for more than 3,000 years, Nowruz is deeply connected to the traditions, emotions, hospitality, and lifestyle of Iranian people and millions of others across Central Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. This beautiful festival begins on the exact moment of the spring equinox, when day and night become equal, representing balance and a fresh start for life.
For ایرانیان (Iranians), Nowruz is much more than just a New Year celebration. It is a cultural identity passed from generation to generation. Families spend weeks preparing for the holiday through cleaning their homes, buying new clothes, decorating houses, visiting relatives, and preparing traditional Persian foods. The famous “Khaneh Tekani,” which means shaking the house, is an important tradition before Nowruz. People clean every corner of their homes to welcome positive energy, happiness, and prosperity into the new year.
One of the most iconic symbols of Persian culture during Nowruz is the Haft-Seen table. Haft-Seen is a beautifully decorated table containing seven symbolic items starting with the Persian letter “S.” Each item carries a special meaning connected to life, growth, health, patience, love, and abundance. Sabzeh (sprouts) symbolizes rebirth and growth. Seeb (apple) represents beauty and health. Senjed symbolizes love and wisdom. Seer (garlic) stands for protection and medicine. Samanu is a sweet pudding representing strength and prosperity. Somaq symbolizes sunrise and patience, while Serkeh (vinegar) represents aging and wisdom.
Alongside these traditional items, many Iranian families also place a mirror, candles, goldfish, colored eggs, flowers, poetry books, and holy books on the Haft-Seen table. The mirror reflects self-awareness and truth, candles symbolize light and happiness, and eggs represent fertility and new beginnings. Persian poetry books, especially works by the legendary Persian poet Hafez, are often included because literature and poetry play a huge role in Iranian culture.
Nowruz celebrations officially begin with families gathering around the Haft-Seen table at the exact moment of the new year. People hug each other, exchange gifts, pray for health and success, and celebrate together. Elders often give children money known as “Eydi,” creating joyful memories for younger generations. Respect for family and elders is one of the strongest values in Iranian culture, and Nowruz highlights these traditions beautifully.
Food is another important part of Nowruz celebrations. Iranian cuisine during the Persian New Year is rich, colorful, and deeply symbolic. One of the most famous dishes is Sabzi Polo ba Mahi, a delicious meal made with herb rice and fish, usually eaten on the first day of the year. Herbs symbolize renewal and freshness, while fish represents life and movement. Families also prepare sweets, nuts, pastries, fruits, and tea for guests during holiday visits.
Hospitality is a major part of Persian culture, and Nowruz is one of the best examples of this tradition. During the holidays, families visit relatives, friends, neighbors, and elders. Guests are welcomed warmly with tea, sweets, fruits, and traditional snacks. Iranian people believe that kindness, generosity, and maintaining strong family connections bring blessings and happiness into the new year.
Another exciting tradition connected to Nowruz is Chaharshanbe Suri, the Festival of Fire, celebrated on the last Wednesday night before the Persian New Year. During this ancient celebration, people jump over bonfires while singing traditional phrases asking the fire to take away sickness and negativity and replace them with health, energy, and warmth. Streets become full of music, laughter, fireworks, and celebration, creating a powerful atmosphere of unity and excitement.
Nature also plays a central role in Nowruz traditions. Persians have always had a deep connection with the environment and seasonal changes. The arrival of spring symbolizes life returning to Earth after winter. Flowers bloom, trees become green, and people spend more time outdoors appreciating the beauty of nature. This respect for nature is reflected throughout Persian culture, architecture, poetry, and traditions.
