This video is a deep dive into Nocturnes: Mozart's night serenades, hints of barcarolle in Beethoven's Op. 79 sonata; the first nocturne of John Field and the later nocturnes Op. 9 of Chopin (his first set) Matthew King also discusses later examples by composers from Liszt to Benjamin Britten. The Nocturne emerged in the 19th century as a meditative and rather atmospheric form of piano composition, evocative of the romance of the night, in which a melody usually floats over a sonorous arpeggiated accompaniment with plenty of pedal. It gradually developed into a major pianistic genre which is still relevant today

In this video, Matthew plays excerpts from the 2nd movement of Beethoven's G major piano sonata Op. 79; John Field's first nocturne, the 1st and 2nd nocturnes of Chopin's Op. 9; Mendelssohn's 'Venetianisches Gondellied' in F sharp minor Op. 30 and Matthew's own nocturne 'The Waves'. The reading from Goethe's Italian Journey (translated by Auden) is accompanied by paintings of Venice by Turner.
