Sin embargo, luego de la guerra en Ucrania, occidente respondió con sanciones y aceleró su ruptura con el gas ruso en cuestión de meses. Y para evitar el colapso, Europa comenzó a comprar gas de sus aliados. Esto significó para Rusia perder a su mayor cliente. O sea, que, sin Europa, Rusia tenía que conseguir otro cliente y China era el camino más lógico.
