Pendant des années, les services de renseignement ont fait disparaître méthodiquement des milliers d’enfants d’opposants. Parmi eux, certains ont été placés dans des orphelinats sous de faux noms. Un crime orchestré par Asma el-Assad, l'ex-première dame.
Ces faux-orphelins souvent placés petits, sont généralement repris par les services de renseignement quelques années plus tard. On perd alors leur trace. La rue syrienne fourmille de rumeurs à leur sujet : adoptés à l’étranger, vendus à des réseaux de mendicité ou de prostitution, envoyés au front… Que sont-ils devenus ? À la chute du régime, quelques-uns ont refait surface et les langues se délient, y compris chez les bourreaux. Mais des milliers de familles restent sans réponses. En mai 2025, le nouveau gouvernement a ouvert une commission d’enquête spécialement dédiée aux enfants disparus.
