Stava tenendo uno dei suoi consueti incontri con gli studenti, format che lo aveva reso famoso sui social per il tradizionale microfono aperto a tutti coloro che volessero discutere le sue posizioni politiche. Proprio durante uno di questi incontri, nello Utah, Charlie Kirk è stato ucciso davanti a migliaia di persone. Un colpo sparato dalla folla, le ultime parlano di un tetto distante 180 metri, che ha colpito la gola dell'attivista. Il video è drammatico: Kirk viene colpito e dalla gola fuoriesce immediatamente molto sangue. Verrà trasportato subito in ospedale in condizioni critiche. Dopo qualche ora la notizia della morte. Charlie Kirk lascia una moglie e due bambini.
Le autorità avevano inizialmente preso in custodia una persona di interesse, rivelatasi poi una falsa pista. L'FBI e le forze dell'ordine locali sono ancora impegnate nelle indagini per catturare l'attentatore.
