Trump says he’s ending trade talks with Canada, blames digital services tax
On Friday, President Trump announced the suspension of trade talks with Canada. He cited Canada's continued tax on technology firms as the reason, labeling it "a direct and blatant attack on our country."In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada would "continue to conduct these complex negotiations in the best interests of Canadians." Trump later expressed his expectation that Canada would rescind the tax. Dr. Dónal Gill, an Assistant Professor of Canadian Politics at Concordia University in Montreal, is discussing these developments on LiveNOW with Austin Westfall.
Trump cited Canada’s digital services tax on American tech companies as the main reason for ending the talks.
"They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing, and is currently under discussion with us, also. Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
