This Guy Went From Prison To Selling 14,000 Pies A WEEK!
He went from prison to building an award-winning pie business producing around 14,000 pies, pasties and sausage rolls every week. But the story behind HM Pasties is even more incredible than the food.In this video, I visit HM Pasties in Oldham, Greater Manchester, to meet founder Lee Wakeham, a former prisoner who turned his life around and created a successful bakery giving ex-offenders and prison leavers a chance.
HM Pasties is one of the UK's most inspiring independent food businesses, producing handmade British pies, traditional Cornish pasties and sausage rolls while helping people with criminal convictions find employment, learn new skills and rebuild their lives.
I start by sitting down with Lee to hear his remarkable story, from a difficult childhood and time in prison to founding HM Pasties in 2017. We talk about life after prison, the challenges facing ex-offenders trying to find work, and why Lee decided to build a business that could change people's lives through food.
Today, HM Pasties supplies pies and pasties to football clubs, pubs, retailers and businesses across the North West, including major names in English football. The bakery has also won multiple national awards for both its food and its work helping people back into employment.
Then it's time to try the food.
I work my way through a huge selection of HM Pasties' award-winning pies, pasties and sausage rolls**, including a classic British steak pie, traditional meat and potato pie, jerk chicken pie, steak and ale pie, aloo saag pie, cheese and onion pie and chicken balti pie.
I also try their award-winning Cornish pasty and a proper flaky sausage roll to find out whether the food lives up to the incredible story behind the business.
But what makes HM Pasties special goes far beyond pastry.
Lee has built a social enterprise around the belief that everyone deserves a second chance. Through employment, training and mentoring, HM Pasties helps people leaving prison develop skills, gain confidence and find a way forward.
This is a British food documentary about much more than pies. It's about prison rehabilitation, independent business, British baking, personal redemption and the power of giving people another opportunity.
If you love traditional British pies, award-winning bakeries, proper Northern food, independent food businesses or incredible real-life stories, this is an episode you won't want to miss.
