An Adrian Dantley Halftime Feature Just Prior to Being Traded
January 20, 1989 - This feature ran during halftime of Adrian Dantley's 25-point performance in a lopsided 132-99 win over the Indiana Pacers. Three weeks later, he was packaged alongside a 1991 first round draft pick to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Mark Aguirre. At the time of the deal, Dantley was averaging 18.4 points in 31.9 minutes per game, both his lowest outputs in a decade. With Dennis Rodman cutting into his on-court opportunities, Dantley bristled, further complicating an already thorny existence within the Pistons locker room. Since his arrival, Dantley struggled to accept a reduced role that chopped his previously league-leading scoring outputs by a third.
Insistent his departure was the result of former teammate Isiah Thomas' singular desire to play with childhood friend Mark Aguirre, Dantley's bitterness would carry forth for decades. In his first return to the Palace as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, Dantley is rumored to have pulled Thomas close prior to tipoff and whispered, "I'll never forgive you for this."
