Chinese President Xi Jinping is preparing to host Russian President Vladimir Putin just days after welcoming US President Donald Trump to Beijing, as China navigates rising global tensions and competing strategic interests.Xi and Putin have met more than 40 times, with both governments describing relations between China and Russia as the strongest in history. For Beijing, the visit is expected to focus on energy security, trade, Iran, and broader geopolitical coordination.
Russia has become one of China’s biggest suppliers of discounted oil and gas, a relationship growing even more important as conflict in the Middle East disrupts global energy flows and keeps the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed.
At the same time, Beijing is trying to stabilize relations with Washington and Europe after months of tensions over trade, technology restrictions, Taiwan, and China’s ties with Moscow.
China also sees Russia as a key strategic partner in challenging US global influence and promoting what both countries describe as a “multipolar world order.” But Beijing’s close relationship with Moscow has strained ties with European governments, which accuse China of helping sustain Russia’s economy during the war in Ukraine.
