Investigasi FIFA menemukan bahwa sejumlah dokumen pendukung yang diajukan FAM, termasuk akta kelahiran kakek-nenek pemain, berisi informasi yang tidak sesuai dengan catatan asli negara tempat kelahiran.
Dokumen asli menunjukkan bahwa para kakek-nenek dari tujuh pemain itu sebenarnya tidak lahir di Malaysia, berbeda dengan versi yang diajukan ke FIFA.
Dengan demikian, para pemain naturalisasi tidak eligible memperkuat Timnas Malaysia dengan jalur naturalisasi keturunan.
FIFA akhirnya menjatuhi hukuman berupa denda sekitar Rp 6,3 miliar kepada induk sepak bola tertinggi Malaysia.
Di tengah isu sanksi dari FIFA, FAM justru pamer pemain naturalisasi terbaru mereka.
Satu-satunya cara ketujuh pemain naturalisasi untuk kembali memperkuat Timnas Malaysia di ajang resmi adalah menjalani proses naturalisasi murni.
Mereka perlu berdomisili di Malaysia selama lima tahun untuk memperoleh status kewarganegaraan.
Hal serupa juga telah ditempuh oleh sang pemain naturalisasi terbaru Timnas Malaysia, Jordan Mintah.
