India has rejected the latest Hague Court of Arbitration ruling on the Indus Waters Treaty, calling the arbitration body “illegally constituted” and asserting that it has no jurisdiction over India’s sovereign decisions.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague ruled that the Indus Waters Treaty remains fully in force and said India must observe its obligations under the 1960 water-sharing agreement with Pakistan. The tribunal also imposed interim restrictions concerning construction work at the Ratle Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River.

India, however, maintains that it has never recognised the Court of Arbitration and has rejected its proceedings and pronouncements. The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that India’s decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty “in abeyance” remains in force.
