RGB vs CMYK: What's the Difference? (And Why Prints Look Dull)
Converting your file to CMYK before you print could be why your colors look dull. Here's RGB vs CMYK, explained simply.Your screen and your printer make color in opposite ways. RGB color is light: every pixel on your screen mixes red, green and blue light, and the more light you add, the brighter it gets. CMYK is ink: cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink can only take light away from white paper.
That difference is why prints look dull. A screen's color gamut is much bigger than ink's, so neon greens, electric blues and hot pinks live outside what ink can print. You'll see what happens to those colors when you convert RGB to CMYK, and why they don't come back.
Then we answer the question everyone asks: RGB or CMYK for printing? Print on demand services, photo labs and inkjet printers usually want RGB. Commercial presses usually want CMYK. No design app or prior knowledge needed.
