South Africa Deploys Police, Military Ahead of 'June 30 Anti-Immigrant Deadline' | Firstpost Africa

South Africa has launched a massive security operation following a highly charged, unbacked June 30 'ultimatum' issued by anti-illegal migration groups demanding undocumented foreign nationals leave the country. Pockets of violent xenophobic unrest have already broken out across various provinces, resulting in several reported casualties. In response, Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and Defence Minister Angie Motshekga have confirmed the nationwide deployment of police forces, with the military placed on standby to protect critical infrastructure, including major airports. Amid mounting international backlash, countries like Malawi, Ghana, and Nigeria are rushing to repatriate their citizens. However, administrative delays and underfunding have triggered a severe humanitarian bottleneck at deportation centres. With local government elections scheduled for November 4, immigration has become a highly politicised flashpoint, raising severe concerns over a repeat of South Africa's historically deadly anti-foreigner riots. Joshua Barnes tells you more on Firstpost Africa.
